Criterion A- Research
OVERVIEW FOR SUMO BOT
Scenario: The entertainment around the world are always on the look out for ways to come up with new forms of entertainment one such way had been to use robots such as Sumo Wrestling which is fast becoming a very popular form of entertainment and yet at the same time it serves as a opportunity for companies to gain funding to improve robots abilities to be able to preform tasks that human being can do! In recent times we have seen in many futuristic films where the whole armed forces are made up of robots such as in Star Wars. A robotic company has approached you, requesting your assistance in creating a competitive robot for the World Sumo Wrestling Competition held in America each year!
Criterion A Inquiry and Analyzing Strand 1. Explain and justify how Sumo Robots can help us to understand and develop robots in the future? (Before you try and answer this Strand, get in small groups 2 or 3 and go on Youtube.com and lightly research how robots effect our lives today already! Then go back to your Weebly Website and type up your own answer)
Sumo bots can help us understand future bots because by building and playing them we can find out what will make these primary bots better and then with futuristic technology we can design more with these ideas in mind. also by programming the EV3s we can gain some knowledge about priming and controlling a future bot.
Strand 2: Get in small groups and Create a Mind map full of ideas, for what you all think a Sumo Robot would need to be successful , remember to refer to this mind map when you are filling in your personal Sumo Robot Research Table for Strand 4 in criterion A

Strand 3. Put together a Weebly slide show (from the side menu) and then add a text box and talk about how these images of Robots gave you ideas of how to create your own Sumo Robot
Strand 4. Research Table on what makes the best Sumo Robot (please refer to your Mind map for research ideas)
My Research Table
Criterion B- Developing Ideas
How to program a sumo bot
How to program an ev3 to android/apple
Log into Youtube.com and review some Sumo Robot wrestling (take note on how they are built and how they successful they are at Wrestling!) Upload a couple of Youtube.com video below of your favorite Sumo Robots!
Strand 1. Suggest some design specifications from your research (from Criterion A) which you are thinking of including into your Sumo Robot Wrestler.
Develop a design specification which outlines the success criteria for the design of a solution based on the data collected
My design specifications will include the following from research carried in Criterion A Inquiry and Analyzing.
My design specifications will include the following from research carried in Criterion A Inquiry and Analyzing.
I chose to use tracks instead of wheels because after research I found that track bots, although slow are hard to push out due to their friction.
to do my bot I am to program a ev3 brick so that it will in turn control my other sensors.
After my research I have found that the bot like the one above will be harder to push out due to its heavy backside
Program that I will be using to operate my Sumo Robot to victory!
Strand 2. Present a Three feasible design ideas, which can be correctly interpreted by others
Design 1
Design 2
Design 3
Strand 3. Present the chosen design from the three suggested design above and outline the reasons for its selection over the other two designs! Strand 4. Develop accurate planning drawings/diagrams and outline requirements for the creation of the chosen solution
Criterion C- Creating
Strand 1. Construct a logical plan, which outlines the efficient use of time and resources, sufficient for peers to be able to follow to create a Rescue Robot (create a your own You Tube Video or Table in Word breaking down how you will follow a series of steps to create a Sumo Robot for wrestling)
Strand 2. Demonstrate excellent technical skills when making the Rescue Robot (This could be displayed in Strand 1 video or Table as well in class) (So no need to write anything here!)
Strand 3. Follow the plan to create the solution, which functions as intended explain changes made to the chosen design and the plan when making the Rescue Robot
During the creation process I made a change by removing the ultrasonic because it wasn't going to bode well with the wall part because if the ultrasonic got damaged then the whole thing could topple
Strand 4. Present the solution as a whole (Photo of the final Sumo Robot)

Criterion D- Reflection
Strand 1. Describe detailed and relevant testing methods, which generate accurate data, to measure the success of the Sumo Robot ?
My Sumo Robot Survey
Strand 2. Explain the success of the Sumo Robot against the design specification? (How did the sumo compare to the design specification in Criterion B)
The design specification was a huge success when used on my bot but at the last minute I had to change the plow like feature in my design for a wall due to lack of time but it worked just as well and was even more resistant to breaking than the plow feature. Although due to this and further lack of time I was not able to find a way to put on the ultrasonic.
Strand 3. Describe how the Sumo Robot could be improved ?
The sumo robot could be improved by adding a more protective layer around the brick and a shock absorber at the front because that prevented the brick from loosening after a hit.
Strand 4. Describe the impact (what happened?) of your Sumo Robot when used on the other Sumo Robots?
When my bot came in contact with other bots the wall was very essential because with it the bot could push forward with force. The tracks were also good because it was then able to ride over rough surfaces well and the bot at its best earned 9 wins, 1 tie and only 1 loss in one day.
